If your recycling wasn’t picked up, your Blue Bin is damaged or missing, or you’re unsure what items are accepted, you’re not alone. Recycling across Ontario changed in 2026, and many homeowners are still adjusting to who handles what.

Blue Bin recycling is overseen by Circular Materials, but day-to-day services such as pickup and bin replacement are handled by local contracted providers. Municipal services, including Toronto’s 311 line, no longer handle recycling questions.

  • Municipalities no longer manage Blue Bin recycling programs, though they still manage garbage and other waste streams.

Ontario now uses a unified recycling materials list. For item-specific guidance:

  • Check the official materials list maintained by Circular Materials, or

  • Use Quartermaster’s waste-sorting tool to quickly see where common household items belong.


Why recycling issues can still feel confusing

Even with a province-wide system, recycling isn’t always intuitive. Packaging changes, materials vary, and service providers differ by area. During a transition of this size, occasional confusion or service issues are normal.
